The tradition of El Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, is a vibrant and heartfelt celebration in Mexican culture that honors and remembers deceased loved ones. Unlike Halloween, which is often associated with spooky costumes and scary themes, El Día de los Muertos is a joyful and colorful festival that takes place from October 31st to November 2nd.
Families create beautiful ofrendas (altars) adorned with marigold flowers, candles, and the favorite foods and mementos of the departed. They believe that the spirits of the deceased return to visit during this time, and the ofrendas are meant to welcome and entertain them. It's a time for reflection, prayer, and remembrance, but it's also a celebration filled with music, dancing, and delicious Mexican cuisine.
One of the members of the Marin Marketing Team, Hannah has a partner Eric, who is from Mexico and they wholeheartedly embrace the tradition of El Día de los Muertos! They decorate their home with sugar skulls, papel picado (colorful paper cutouts), and marigold flowers, creating a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere for family who have passed.
The Day of the Dead is a beautiful testament to the strong bond between the living and the deceased, where love, respect, and honour is shown in this heartwarming yearly tradition.
